American Recovery and Reinvestment ActThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009 with the intent to stimulate economic growth, create or save millions of jobs, enhance our domestic renewable energy capacity, safeguard the well-being of our most vulnerable residents, and strengthen our national infrastructure through a variety of multibillion dollar investments. On October 1, 2009, the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority Clean Water Fund commended Mayfield Electric & Water Systems for our efforts to improve the public service facilities in the city of Mayfield. The Authority approved our America Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) loan for the Red Duck Creek interceptor rehabilitation project for $975,000.00. The loan will contain a principle forgiveness of 52.1%. Red Duck Creek runs through the City of Mayfield parallel to two sewer lines that drain approximately 50% of Mayfield residents’ sewage. The 12”-18” sewer line was installed in 1924, and the 21” line was installed in 1970. These pipes are made of VCP, a type of clay tile, and have been known to seep during heavy rain when the creek fills and the ground is saturated. MEWS has recognized this problem and has requested assistance from the state to help improve the quality of the sewer pipes at Red Duck Creek. The interceptor rehabilitation project will utilize a cured-in-place pipe method to line 4,580 feet of 8”sewer lines and 6,570 feet of 21” sewer lines, totaling 11,150 feet of sanitary sewer lines within the city of Mayfield. In addition, this project will include the rehabilitation of 38 manholes in an effort to reduce the infiltration and inflows that currently affect this portion of the sewer. MEWS chose to line the existing VCP pipes because this rehabilitation pipe method adds another 50+ years to the lines and will cost millions less than replacing the whole line.
This project will help to keep Mayfield’s creek clean and
sanitary while reducing costs in treating water. MEWS always strives to find
innovative ways to save money and keep the environment clean.
